ISIS 'blows up 4th-century Mar Behnam Catholic monastery

ISIS 'blows up famed 4th-century Mar Behnam Catholic monastery' in Iraq

According to the pictures released by IS, it is believed that the Islamic State (ISIS) militants have  blown up parts of the ancient monastery of Mar Behnam near the predominantly Christian town of Qaraqosh, south-east of Mosul.

The monastery was founded in the 4th century and built on the tomb of Berhnam and his sister Sarah, who were converted to Christianity by St. Matthew. It was founded as part of the Assyrian church of the east, and like all churches in the region was part of the Syrian Orthodox Church.

The photos, released by IS members, show the 4th-century monastery's tomb complex of Mar Behnam and Mar  Sarah reduced to rubble".
IS fighters had stormed the monastery in July 2014 and expelled all its resident monks.

Earlier in March, IS militants reportedly bulldozed the 2,000-year-old city of Hatra and the Nimrud archaeological site near Mosul.

On 26 February, the militants published a video showing the destruction artefacts in a Mosul museum and at the Nergal Gate to ancient Nineveh.
